Balancing the Benefits and Risks of Counseling

Choosing to engage in counseling will have benefits ~

Benefits may Include:

  • Feeling better about yourself
  • Understanding yourself and others better
  • Learning new skills
  • Improving your relationships
  • Altering troubling behaviors
  • And more

AND it will also involve risks ~

Risks may include:

  • Trusting another enough to share honestly & openly about yourself
  • Uncovering of unpleasant memories
  • Dealing with uncomfortable feelings (sadness, guilt, anger) that may arise prior to resolving issues
  • Your changes may initially confuse and negatively affect close relationships
  • And more

Please discuss any concerns you may have about either risks or benefits with me during our sessions.

Knowing the risks, there are two R's to consider before committing to counseling... ready and right .
  1. You need to be ready for therapy. There is no ideal time. It is not wrong if you don't choose therapy at this time. The correct time for you will occur. Sometimes it will take your first visit to know if you are ready.
  2. You want to find the right therapist for you. Take advantage of free phone or in-person opportunities to evaluate your connection with a therapist. Feeling uncomfortable with a specific therapist does NOT indicate anything is wrong with you. If you choose to look for another, do not feel guilty. A healthy therapist will not feel hurt or offended because you did not choose them. Please see Are We A Good Fit to help you make a decision to call me.
